Pest Prevention Tips
Interior Pest Prevention
Tips
- Exterior doors must be well sealed. If light
can be seen around or under a door or you can feel a draft, then
insects can enter your home.
- Check for Plumbing leaks. Seal gaps around
plumbing pipes behind cabinetry. Don't let water accumulate anywhere
in or around your home.
- Check the attic for water/moisture. A leaky
roof or gable/roof vents not sealed tightly can cause water/moisture.
- Open storage containers should be sealed. Open
food, pet food, and birdseed containers should be tightly sealed.
Insects can enter through the smallest of gaps, cracks and openings.
Exterior Pest Prevention
Tips
- Conduits and Piping. Seal and caulk any piping
and conduits (ex. Gas lines and air conditioning lines) where they
enter structures. Many insects and rodents can gain access through
those areas. Also caulk all cracks and crevices around window frames
& doors to prevent insect entry.
- Check Gutters for leaves and debris. Gutters
can accumulate water/moisture, which can attract insects. Any leaves
and debris must be cleaned out. Also gutter drains should be diverted
away to discourage moisture build up near the structure.
- Screens. Repair or replace any torn or damaged
screens to help prevent insect entry into the structure.
- Prune/Trim Foliage & Vegetation. It is important
to trim away bushes, foliage, and vegetation away from the structure
at least one foot. Bushes near and on the structure create harborage
areas for the insects.
- Debris, Clutter & Woodpiles. It is important
to remove any debris, clutter, and woodpiles away from the structure.
